Our goal

The goal of the Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency Medical Student Program is to provide 3rd and 4th year medical students with an opportunity to learn and practice clinical skills in a family medicine setting.

Objectives of this program include:

Sharpen history taking and physical diagnostic skills in an outpatient or inpatient setting
Practice medical decision making via evidence-based medicine tools
Learn to present cases to attending physicians and to utilize consultants appropriately
Understand the role of family medicine in the overall healthcare system
Experience post-graduate medical education by interacting with family medicine residents

High Evaluation Award Recipient

The VCU Department of Family Medicine and Population awarded Centra Medical Group - Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency with the High Evaluation Award for 2015-2016 for excellence in teaching. Faculty who teach in courses or clerkships are considered for high evaluation awards. Award recipients must receive a ranking of excellent or higher on student evaluations. We are proud to be an award recipient and continually strive to promote a positive learning environment filled with great experiences for our medical students.

Ambulatory Care Clerkship

Open to 3rd and 4th year medical students
The clerkship begins with an orientation and "shadowing" experience with faculty to become familiar with normal operations in the family medicine office.
The majority of the time is spent at the CMG-Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency, interviewing and working up patients presenting for care under faculty supervision.
The student will attend scheduled didactic curricular offerings (3-4 hours/wk).
Additional experiences may be scheduled in the nursing home, home visits or office lab and radiology.

Ambulatory clerkships are 4 weeks in length.

Acting Internship

Open to 4th year medical students only.
The clerkship begins with orientation and rounds with the Family Medicine Service team at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Students will receive patients for admission and treatment under the supervision of the senior resident and family medicine attending faculty on service.
Daily teaching rounds will be made with the rounding team.
The student will attend scheduled didactic curricular offerings (3-4 hours/wk).

Inpatient clerkships are 4 weeks in length.

Housing & Benefits

Housing may be available for out-of-town medical students to stay in a 3-bedroom co-ed house managed by Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency. Students will be required to abide by Centra's and Lynchburg Family Medicine Residency Housing rules and policies.
It is necessary to have use of a car for the clerkship experiences.
Meals may be purchased at a discount in Centra cafeterias with a valid Centra student ID card during the dates of the clerkship.
