LYNCHBURG, VA.- Centra, along with Lifepoint Behavioral Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation, affiliates of Lifepoint Health, have begun construction on a new medical campus to expand access to behavioral health and rehabilitation care. Expected to open in 2026, the Centra Simons Run Medical Campus will become the new home for the inpatient behavioral health and rehabilitation care currently provided at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital, while also expanding access to these services to meet increasing community need.
"By partnering to develop these new hospitals, Centra is reinforcing our dedication to meeting the behavioral health and rehabilitation needs of individuals throughout the region,” said Richard Tugman, interim president and CEO of Centra. “These areas of care demand specialized facilities that ensure safety, comfort and privacy—precisely what these new hospitals will provide. This is another milestone in advancing health and healing in our community."
The future Centra Simons Run Medical Campus will span approximately 75,000 square feet and house two hospitals dedicated to behavioral health and rehabilitation services.
Centra Behavioral Health Hospital will have 72 beds and be specially designed to create a therapeutic environment for patients, featuring open, airy spaces, spacious patient rooms, community areas, outdoor courtyards, and advanced clinical spaces to enhance patient and family experience. The hospital will provide inpatient and outpatient services for patients diagnosed with a broad range of mental health illnesses.
Centra Rehabilitation Hospital will have 50 beds and feature several multidisciplinary therapy gymnasiums outfitted with the latest therapeutic technologies, in addition to outdoor courtyards and spaces designed to help patients return to activities of daily living. The hospital will feature a 12-bed secured brain injury unit with private dining and a therapy gym. The hospital will be designed to support the needs of patients receiving acute rehabilitation care for a range of conditions, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, complex neurological disorders, orthopedic issues, multiple trauma, amputation, and other impairments affecting functional or cognitive skills.
“This is an exciting day for our team as we break ground and begin construction on these two new specialty hospitals,” said Russ Bailey, president of Lifepoint Behavioral Health and Lifepoint Rehabilitation. “Our ongoing partnership with Centra will expand access to vitally needed inpatient rehabilitation and behavioral health services available in the greater Lynchburg region. We share a commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-driven care, and I look forward to seeing all that we will continue to accomplish together on behalf of our patients.”
Located on the Simons Run property acquired by Centra in 2017, the Centra Simons Run Medical Campus will become a premier specialty care center in Lynchburg. Upon completion, Lifepoint Rehabilitation and Lifepoint Behavioral Health will manage day-to-day operations of both hospitals.
