Centra Lynchburg Hospitals Achieve Coveted Five-Star CMS Rating

Published on Tuesday August 1, 2023

Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and Virginia Baptist Hospital (LGH/VBH) were recently awarded a five-star overall rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

CMS annually assigns star ratings to hospitals nationwide based on their performance across the five quality categories of Mortality, Safety of Care, Readmission, Patient Experience and Timely & Effective Care with more stars reflecting higher performance.

Analysis of specific measures within each quality category is used to determine each category’s score which are then combined to create a Hospital Summary Score with each hospital’s performance being compared across all hospitals in the United States who also submitted their data to CMS. Only 483 hospitals in the nation and 13 in Virginia received a five-star rating this year.

In addition to Lynchburg General and Virginia Baptist moving from a three-star rating to a five-star rating, Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital (BMH) moved from a three-star rating to a four-star rating and Centra Southside Community Hospital (SCH) maintained its four-star status.

“Centra's care teams have put forth an unparalleled level of hard work and dedication which is reflected in these outstanding ratings. Our performance in each quality category demonstrates our pursuit of exceptional patient outcomes and ultimately the advancement of health and healing in the communities we serve,” said Centra CEO, Amy Carrier.

CMS produces this comprehensive rating system to help patients make informed decisions and determine where they can find the highest quality care. For more information about the CMS rankings, please visit, https://www.medicare.gov/care-compare
