Eamon's story: Pediatric specialty care close to home

Eamon laughs with his mother

Thanks to your generous donations, expert care is now just a short trip from Eamon's home or school in a space that is warm and welcoming.

At a routine exam almost two years ago, Eamon’s primary care doctor seemed concerned about his delayed growth. Bloodwork and an evaluation revealed a hormone deficiency in addition to the rare genetic disorder he was diagnosed with as a toddler. The social and observant middle schooler, who loves music and horseback riding, needs frequent checkups and bloodwork to check his hormone levels and growth progress.

Thanks to your support, Eamon can get the specialty care he needs close to home. The Pediatric Specialty Center at Centra Virginia Baptist Hospital reopened in 2022 after a multiyear $250,000 renovation and expansion project. The center now houses six pediatric service lines: allergy, endocrinology, genetics, lactation, neurodevelopmental and pulmonary.

Eamon’s family has been going there since it opened instead of making the much longer drive they used to make for care.

Eamon and his mother“The staff has been great,” said Shereen Gamaluddin, Eamon’s mother. “With four children, two of whom have special needs, good care close to home is essential. It has really helped not having to drive as far. It helps decrease stress for us. It’s one less thing we have to worry about.”
