Postpartum Pre-eclampsia

You have made it through delivery, but now more than ever your health is a priority. Postpartum Pre-eclampsia is a serious disease, specific to women in the first 6 weeks following delivery, related to high blood pressure.

In order to ensure you and your care teams are aware of your risk, you will be given a blue bracelet during your pregnancy or after delivery if you are at a higher risk for postpartum pre-eclampsia. Please wear your wristband for the next 6 weeks to all follow up doctor appointments so your care provider is aware of your risk and at all times as a personal reminder to check for warning signs.

Warning Signs

  • Stomach Pain
  • Nausea and vomitting
  • Swelling in hands or face
  • Headaches
  • Seeing spots
  • Shortness of breath

Risks to You

  • Seizure
  • Stroke
  • Organ Damage
  • Death

pre-eclampsiaWhat should you do if you are at risk?

  • Follow-up with your doctor within 2-5 days for a blood pressure check
  • Keep all follow-up doctor appointments and wear your bracelet
  • Go directly to the emergency room and report you have been recently pregnant if warning signs present themselves

What do you do if you are taking your blood pressure at home and it seems high?

  • Call your OB provider if your blood pressure is more than 150/100 (if either number is high).
  • Go to the Emergency Department if your blood pressure is more than 160/110 (if either number is high) and tell them that you have recently had a baby and are at risk. Your blood pressure needs to be treated right away.

18% of the deaths related to pregnancy in 2015-2016 resulted from seizures due to pre-eclampsia, but with awareness and early treatment, it is preventable! If you have any symptoms, call your OB provider immediately or visit the ED.
